Dog Reinforcement Training

Dog Reinforcement Training

Dogs are very intelligent animals and it is possible to train them to do various things. Some people want to teach their dog to follow simple commands and to follow various rules. Others are trying to train their dogs to be used for hunting or to place them in shows. One of the best ways to train any type of dog is using positive reinforcement. This type of training focuses on rewarding them for the positive behaviors that they offer.

In order for reinforcement training to be effective, the reward has to be implemented immediately following the act. This allows the dog to make the connection between the two events. It can be words of praise, a head pat, or even a treat to help encourage the efforts to be repeated. Dogs love to get attention, especially when it is positive in nature. It doesn’t take them long at all to catch on to what pleases their owners.

Consistency is the key to reinforcement training for dogs. They will become confused if you don’t continue to offer the same form of reward each time. This is a key concept that is vital for the trainer to understand. Otherwise the entire series of events can be come extremely difficult to follow.

If you have several family members, make sure you are all in agreement as to what the reward will be. The working needs to be the same as well. For example you can’t tell a dog to sit and then someone else it telling it to get down for the same command. This will be confusing to the dog and delay the advancement of the training. Make sure you choose a type of reward that the pet responds to well. Otherwise they may not find it to be motivating enough.

Many veterinarians and professional dog trainers recommend reinforcement. It is very humane and it helps to build the bond between the animals and the owners. Punishing a dog for not following a command can lead them to feel isolated or even make them mean. Dogs are very intelligent animals but they don’t like to be treated poorly at all. Animal right activities are strongly against hitting animals of any kind in order to teach them about behaviors.
