Homemade Dog Toys for Maximus the Beagle

Homemade Dog Toys for Maximus the Beagle

I’m sure glad I learned how to make homemade dog toys.

We love our Beagle, Maximus, but he sure can be destructive.

I can’t remember all of the items that Max has chewed on, or chewed up, here are a few of the most notable.

He chewed up my wife’s cell phone, a thick plastic glass (photo below) just about all of our wooden furniture have chew marks. Our young daughters have lost a number of various toys to Max’s chewing on things.
Beagle chewing problem

The thing he chewed on that upset me the most, was the rubber hose on my outdoor grill. He chewed up the hose from the propane tank to the grill (thankfully I had the gas valve off).

We try to protect Max from himself, but it is difficult. I don’t know where he gets some of the things he chews on, he is very good at finding things he should not be chewing on.

We have tried to entertain Max and distract him from chewing on things by buying him chew bones, rawhide treats etc. Instead of chewing on these things, he hides and buries them.

We have also bought Max a number of toys to play with, that he can also chew on. He loves these toys, but tends to chew them up quickly and buying these toys was getting expensive.

I got tired of spending too much money on dog toys that Max would chew up way too quickly.

So, I thought about making my own dog toys. I noticed a lot of those expensive store bought toys were nothing more than some rope, tennis balls - things I had laying around the house, or things that would not cost much to buy.

Before I got started I decide to look online to see if I could find instructions on how to build some of the dog toys I had in mind.

I’m sure glad I looked. I found a great book that teaches you how to make a number of homemade dog toys, just like those you would find at your pet superstore, but for a much lower cost.

This book provides the recipes for the homemade dog toys. It provides the materials required, and detailed instructions - saving me a lot of time and making more dog toys than I would have thought of on my own.

If you are spending too much money on dog toys that are way too expensive, it’s time you started making your own homemade dog toys. It’s not hard to do, it’s actually fun and you can save a ton of money.

Max still chews his toys up, but I can replace them quickly and the homemade dog toys are so inexpensive it’s no big deal.

Dog-Secrets, your next dog food recipe

Auto Date Sunday, February 17th, 2008

    Hi Dog-Secrets,

Here is your next dog food recipe, compliments of
    doginfosecrets.com :

    Ellie’s Dog Loaf

    2 1/8 cups water
    2 cups brown rice
    2 large potatoes
    2 large carrots
    1 1/8 pounds pumpkin
    2 cloves garlic
    3/4 bunch silver beet
1 cup whole meal pasta — or Soya pasta
    2 cups rolled oats
    1 cup whole meal flour
1 1/8 pounds mince (or liver or fish)
    3 eggs

Boil the rice in water for 10 - 15 minutes and chop the veggies (I
put them through the food processor) Add the veggies and pasta to
the rice and cook for 10 minutes.

Turn off the heat and leave to
cool (not vital if you’re like me and in a rush!) Add mince, eggs,
herbs, rolled oats and flour and mix together. Add more oats or
flour if mixture is sticky (should be like a fruit cake mix).

Spoon into oiled and floured loaf tins and bake in a hot oven 180
    degrees CENTIGRADE for 1 hour.

Remove from tins ,turn oven off and return loaves to oven for 5 -
10 minutes to firm bottom crust.

Take out of oven, leave to cool and use immediately or wrap in foil
    and freeze.

    Makes about 3 - 4 loaves.

    Thanks,
    Mike Gates

Dog-Secrets - Reward training your dog

Auto Date Thursday, February 14th, 2008

    Hey Dog-Secrets,

Here’s Today’s Joke: Why do dogs wag their tails?
Because no one else will do it for them.

    *********************************

    Reward training your dog

Reward training is quite possibly one of the oldest methods of
training dogs, dating back to the days when people started trying
    to domesticate wild animals.

It is probably the method of dog training that most of us are
familiar with, and it is a natural instinct to reward the dog when
they perform the task that we have asked of them.

Some people prefer to use a combination of the reward training
methods and the leash and collar training to get the best out of
their dog in the least time.

Some dogs respond better to reward training than leash and collar
training so your decision might depend on what method you see
working the best with your dog.

    More Information:
    doginfozone.com/likes/train

Reward training for dogs, has seen a remarkable increase in
popularity over recent years with many people finding this as their
preferred method of training their new puppies.

There is no definitive answer as to what the best type of dog
training is, as some dogs respond better to one technique than
    others.

There are certainly some advanced techniques that are taught in the
top dog training manuals that will ensure you train your dog,
faster and easier than trying to do so on your own.

Most dogs will respond to some extent, to either method of
training, and any training is certainly better than none, even if
you only teach your dog the most basic commands.

Reward training is even used for dogs that work in the military and
    police.

Those dogs that are used for scent detection and tracking are also
often trained using some form of reward training.

Generally, reward training is in the form of some type of food
    reward.

  • Dog-Secrets - Separation Anxiety

Auto Date Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

    Hey Dog-Secrets,

Dog Quote: They are better than human beings, because they know but
    do not tell.
    …..Emily Dickenson

    *********************************

    Separation Anxiety

Many people are unaware that separation anxiety even exists with
    their dog.

There are many different traits that can be seen in a dog due to
    separation anxiety.

When we leave home for work each day, most people are unaware of
what their dog is experiencing, and for many of them it is
    separation anxiety.

We assume that because the dog appears to be happy when we arrive
home at the end of the day, that it has been happy all day long.

In many instances, the dog could have had quite a traumatic day.

    More Information:
    doginfozone.com/likes/train

Many dogs are concerned that when their owner leaves, they might
    not be coming back.

They have no way of knowing that we will be back in eight or nine
    hours.

The stress that this causes for a dog can lead to destructive
behavior where they will chew everything in sight.

Other dogs might express their stress by soiling the house.

Either way, if you come home from work and find that your
well-trained dog has done something out of the ordinary you need to
consider whether it has had a stressful day or not, and certainly
not reprimand it until you know what the circumstances have been.

If you sense your dog has been stressed during the day, you might
like to consider giving it more toys to stop it from becoming
bored, or better still, have somebody call in and visit at some
stage throughout the day so it knows that it is not alone.

Exercising your dog in the morning before you leave is a good idea
because it is more likely to sleep during the day.

Another method to reassure your dog that you will be coming back
when you leave, is to do several smaller trips in the course of a
few days or weeks, where the dog becomes more and more accustomed
to you leaving and returning at different intervals.

By slowly extending these hours of separation, your dog will become
accustomed to it, thereby eliminating separation anxiety.

    Hi Mike

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series. This week Abril says…

“Hi Daniel, I would like to thank you for making my life easier.
Since I purchased your book Sugar and I have become so close, I can
take her out on walks in front of people, she would always become
too hyper by other people that she was intolerable. She now is a
well trained companion that I can take everywhere…”

And we hear from Kellie who has a question that starts like this…

“I have a very alpha border terrier and a non-alpha pug. My alpha
border continually challenges me but remains submissive to me - yet
he’s always there pushing the button. I’ll explain as we go. I am a
foster home for strays and rescues from the shelters. I foster
until the dogs are adopted and this turnover is about every 2
weeks. Most rescues I place are small dogs and most come with
    issues…”

  • Dog-Secrets, here is your next dog food recipe

Auto Date Friday, January 25th, 2008

    Hi Dog-Secrets,
Here is your next dog food recipe, compliments of
    doginfosecrets.com :

    Chicken Flavored Dog Biscuits

    2 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
    1/4 cup warm water
    1 teaspoon salt — optional
    1 egg
1 cup chicken broth — slightly warmed
    1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rye flour — optional
    1/2 cup cornmeal
    1 cup cracked wheat
    1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add salt, one beaten
egg, and the warmed chicken broth. Add all flour except the
all-purpose flour and mix well. Slowly add all-purpose flour until
a stiff dough is formed and it can be kneaded by hand.

Knead for only a couple minutes, just enough to get the dough to
hold together. Roll out dough about 1/4″ thick and cut with cookie
cutters, Place biscuits on a large cookie tray and place directly
in a 300 degree oven, they don’t need to rise. Bake for 45 min. and
    then turn off the oven.

You can let them sit in the oven overnight and in the morning they
will be real hard and good for your dog’s teeth. You could also
vary this recipe by adding milk for a milk-bone type biscuit or
shortening for a little extra fat.

Try different liquids and even honey or molasses, Check with your
veterinarian for any other nutritional suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Mike Gates

  • Dog-Secrets - Stopping Your Dog from Chewing

Auto Date Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

    Hey Dog-Secrets,

Dog Quote: The other day I saw two dogs walk over to a parking
meter. One of them says to the other, “How do you like that? Pay
    toilets!”
    …..Dave Starr

    *********************************

Stopping your dog from chewing everything in sight.

It is only natural for dogs to want to chew.

It is a natural instinct, but they need to be trained what they can
and can’t chew without causing problems.

While they might feel the need to sharpen their teeth you certainly
don’t want them to be doing that on your furniture.

It is a lot cheaper to invest some money in suitable toys that the
dog can chew or get their teeth cleaned professionally than to
    replace expensive household items.

    More Information:
    doginfozone.com/likes/train

The simplest method of training a dog not to chew everything in
sight is to confine it to a small area where only those things that
it should be allowed to chew are present.

The dog will then become accustomed to the smell of those things
that it is allowed to chew and then when it is allowed out into the
household where other items are present you can teach it not to
chew items such as furniture, shoes, clothing, etc.

It is also possible to teach an old dog not to chew items by using
the same techniques although it is harder if it has been doing this
for many years of its life.

It is always preferable to teach your dog the lessons they need to
know as soon as possible as training gets harder with the age of
    the dog.

If the dog is going to be left inside for extended periods while
you’re not around it is wise to remove any items that you don’t
want it to chew until it is fully trained.

Until that time, the dog should be content with suitable chewing
    toys.

    Hi Mike

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series. This week Sabine and
    Quincy say…

“Through continous practice Quincy now heels wherever I go, keeping
a constant eye on me. Teaching her the sit and especially the down
was very important to keep her with a submissive attitude. She
fought it for a while but I consistantly showed her that there are
no options when I give her a command…”

And we have a question from Chris, which starts as follows…

“I volunteer at our local animal shelter for our Humane Society
every Saturday and whenever else I can. Well, I had a Golden for 11
years, she had to be put down June of 2004….VERY sad day for our
family. :( I started volunteering in August that year and in
October found this poor, scared, but beautiful flat-coat retriever
at the shelter. It was very obvious she had been mistreated, was
pregnant when she was turned in and the shelter decided to spay her
so she never had the litter (She was 1 1/2 years old at the
    time)…”

  • Dog-Secrets - The Call to Come Command

Auto Date Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

    Hey Dog-Secrets,

Dog Quote: A dog is the only thing on this earth that loves you
    more than he loves himself.
    …..Josh Billings

    *********************************

The Command to Come when Called.

One of the most basic and important commands that you will need to
teach your dog is to come when called.

No matter what else happens, if you have taught your dog this
command you will always be able to maintain control whether at home
    or in public.

Should your dog ever get off it’s leash or escape from your
property you will know that when you call it that it will come back
and this certainly makes life a lot easier for the dog owner.

    More Information:
    doginfozone.com/likes/train

For working dogs, this is a vital skill as a handler needs to know
that at any time they can get the dog back beside them and ready
    for their next command.

When you are comfortable that your dog knows the commands of ’stay’
and ‘come’ you no longer have to be as concerned that it needs to
be kept on a leash at all times.

This allows both the owner and the dog to have a lot more freedom.

Generally, this command of ‘come’ is incorporated when teaching the
dog to stay, as these two lessons work hand-in-hand with one another.

The dog is first taught to stay and then the owner will teach the
dog to come, while still on an extended leash.

After gaining success in getting the dog to come, while still on a
leash, the owner can then teach it to do so without the leash.

Obviously for an untrained animal this would be better taught in an
enclosed area until the dog has learned to respond to that command.

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series. This week we hear from Dee

    sadie. Carol writes…

“Six weeks ago I adopted a 9 month old Beagle named Sadie. We have
bonded well and she is doing very well, except for one thing…….
can a dog become obsessed with a ball? She loves to play fetch!
Which is fine for about 15 minutes or so at a time, but that’s all
she wants to do (except for our walks together).

There are times that I simply cannot play ball with her and she
becomes VERY annoying and insistent. She has an interesting variety
of dog toys, but won’t play with anything but this one particular
ball. Do you have any suggestions?”
